Rohit Bose Roy wants a ‘swimmer’s body’: Know what is it

After sharing his diet, fitness, and meditation routine, actor and host Rohit Bose Roy recently revealed that he intends to have a "swimmer's body." "I am very close to where I want to be. I want a lean body. I want a swimmer's body. Now, the whole desire is to be fit and healthy from within. Ever since Covid-19, my whole thought process has changed," Roy said during a conversation with actor Larissa Bonesi and fitness trainer Apurva Tilwani on his Unstoppable podcast. What is a swimmer's body? A "swimmer's body" is often admired for its lean, muscular build, characterised by broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and well-defined muscles. Dr Arvind Aggarwal, senior consultant, internal medicine, Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute, told indianexpress.com that a swimmer's body is characterised by a lean, toned, and athletic physique with broad shoulders, a strong core, and a streamlined appearance. "This body type results from muscle strength, low body fat, and flexibility, honed through swimming and complementary exercises," said Dr Aggarwal. This body type is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functionally efficient for swimming. Achieving a swimmer's body involves a combination of swimming, strength training, and proper nutrition, said Mukul Nagpaul, founder of Pmftraining and Fit India Movement Ambassador. Swimming is a full-body workout that engages muscles that are often hard to target with other forms of exercise. It works the shoulders, back, core, and legs, promoting muscle endurance and cardiovascular fitness. "The resistance of water provides a low-impact environment, reducing the risk of injury while effectively building strength and stamina," noted Nagpaul. How to

build a swimmer’s body To develop this physique, you should focus on a combination of swimming, strength training, and good nutrition, said Nagpaul. Swim regularly: Swimming laps with strokes like freestyle, butterfly, or backstroke, engages multiple muscle groups, burns calories, and improves endurance. Strength training: Incorporate resistance exercises targeting the upper body, core, and legs. "Pull-ups, planks, and weighted squats are excellent choices," said Dr Aggarwal. Focus on flexibility: Stretching exercises and yoga can enhance mobility, which is crucial for efficient swimming movements. Balanced nutrition: Consume a protein-rich diet with healthy fats and carbohydrates to fuel workouts and aid muscle recovery. Dos and don’ts It's important to note that while swimming is excellent for building a lean physique," it should be complemented with land-based exercises to ensure balanced muscle development". "Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including adequate sleep and stress management, is vital for achieving and sustaining a swimmer's body," said Nagpaul. - Maintain proper swimming techniques to prevent injuries. A coach can help refine your strokes. - Don’t overtrain without rest days, which may lead to fatigue or injuries. - Prioritise hydration and recovery after workouts. - Dr Aggarwal said not to neglect cardio and overall fitness, as swimming alone may not suffice. Consistency, proper training, and a balanced lifestyle are key to achieving this coveted physique, said Dr Aggarwal.
